Fish farming company Fjarðalax in Patreksfjörður, the southern West Fjords, is proving successful and is about to hire 25 new employees. However, the lack of available housing is posing a problem.
The Tómas Guðmundsson Literature Prize was awarded to Hjörtur Marteinsson for his collection of poems called Alzheimer-tilbrigðin ('Alzheimer Variations').
Glaciologist Oddur Sigurðsson of the Icelandic Met Office has named 130 Icelandic glaciers that used to be unnamed. Most of the glaciers are located on Tröllaskagi peninsula between Eyjafjörður and Skagafjörður in North Iceland.
Scientists in Iceland will use drones for the seal count this year, organized by the Institute of Freshwater Fisheries and Icelandic Seal Center. If the method proves successful, it will be added to the usual counting of seals by plane and is hoped to reduce costs.
The European Day of Languages was celebrated in Iceland on Friday, among other things with a symposium at the University of Iceland. Auður Hauksdóttir, lecturer in the Danish language, stated that Icelandic students don’t learn enough languages.
