This winter, photographer Annie Ling traveled to Ólafsfjörður, a town of 800 residents in northern Iceland, for the two-month Skammdegi AIR artist residency. The New Yorker has published some of her photos.
"A likeness of Jesus Christ appeared in front of a stunned photographer during a northern lights display in Iceland. Seen high in the sky, the shape of the aurora borealis resembled the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil."
There are indications that Iceland’s biggest hotel, Fosshótel Reykjavík, will be fully booked on the opening day in June this summer.
What shocks some is that the group’s home page shows Iceland’s Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, with a Hitler mustache.
Volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson describes one of the new craters in the Holuhraun eruption as "among the most beautiful in Iceland."
NASA has been following the Holuhraun eruption closely from the very beginning. The two images here show the eruption in the very early days and other the lava as it was in the beginning of January.
