Horseback archery training in Reykjavík has shown some interesting results today. Both mares appeared eager to get back to work after their break.
They joined their trainers in preparations for the first shots on a wooden archery target, as they had been allowed to join any step that was taken with them. The confidence they had been gaining over the past days, allowed to start riding without reins right from the start, and then shoot from horseback on the target, which creates a certain sudden level of energy in the rider's body. Also the horsebow Pettra Engeländer brought from Germany comes with 30 pound, which means quite a transmission of energy through two bodies. In the end it was possible to shoot arrows from a walking horse, with a trainer walking by its side.
Both mares are very much aware of their "job" and one of them proved its confidence, when a guest came in and was allowed to sit on horseback and shoot. The mare was able to cope with the guest's different body tension, created by excitement and probably fear.
Another interesting thing was the reaction of an unrelated horse entering the riding hall while equipment still was on its place. The gelding appeared very alarmed and ready to run away when getting aware of the strange things. He was allowed to just stand in the door, with the mares close by, while the humans were busy with something else. After short time he started to relax, loose his fear and cope even with an arrow to be shot, just feeling safe enough in the mares' company.
The horses will get another two days' break, with the clinic starting on saturday.
