About 300 people gathered for the Loftslagsganga (‘Climate Walk’) in Reykjavík on Sunday. “We had a lot of attendance despite the weather,” writer Hildur Knútsdóttir, one of the organizers, told visir.is. It was rainy and stormy.

The walk was part of an initiative organized by the global movement Peoples Climate March, calling for the restriction of greenhouse gas emissions.

This weekend, over 2,700 events took place in 160 countries, the occasion being a New York symposium convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on climate change.

The Reykjavík walk started at the kiosk Drekinn on the corner of Njálsgata and Frakkastígur, progressing down Skólavörðustígur, Bankastræti and Austurstræti to Austurvöllur square in the city center.

There, participants demanded that the government meet its obligations to protect the environment, as climate change is one of the biggest challenges Iceland and the whole world is facing.
