The organization of young environmentalists has posted a plea and a challenge to 31 Icelandic outdoor festivals on its website.
The organization wants festival organizers to think greener and clean up their act, Vísir reported.
“The environmental impact of outdoor festivals is to a large extent the responsibility of those holding the festivals, and it is relatively easy to make positive changes and do better each year,” the challenge states.
Festival organizers are encouraged to separate trash, encourage people to use sustainable means of transport, and prevent refuse blowing away with the wind. “Then it is also important to have cigarette stub bins in as many places as possible,” the statement goes on.
“It is urgently necessary to look at all ways which could lead to positive changes in this matter. Many outdoor festivals in Iceland are a long way from being environmentally friendly, but it is relatively simple to do better and improve ourselves.”
