A protest is scheduled for 5:00 pm today in front of the Reykjavík District Court building on occasion of recent verdicts in rape cases in which all the accused were acquitted. A Facebook event has been created by the organizers under the slogan ‘No Thanksgiving―Incompetent Courts.’

A post on the site states, “Of only six guilty verdicts in district court since January 1, there were three foreigners and one gay man [convicted]. The message is that Icelandic, heterosexual men are allowed to rape women as they please. How can citizens trust such courts in a democracy?”

One of the demands listed by the organizers is that more female judges be appointed. They encourage people to hold similar demonstrations in front of other district court buildings.

The recent acquittals have caused tremendous anger in society, Vísir reports.

Monday, last week, the South Iceland District Court acquitted a man charged with raping a coworker. Friday, last week, the Reykjavík District Court acquitted five men, ages 18-21, accused of gang-raping a 16-year-old girl in the Reykjavík suburb of Breiðholt last year.

This week, a young man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old, mentally disabled girl in May of last year, was acquitted in the West Fjords District Court.

Finally, also this week, a man was acquitted in the West Iceland District Court after being charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in March of last year.
