The West Fjords police have questioned witnesses and some of the individuals suspected of having vandalized nature reserve Hornstrandir the first weekend in June. Vegetation had been scorched, animals shot, a seal left skinned on the beach and an emergency shelter trashed.
Police chief Hlynur Hafberg Snorrason told RÚV that police take this matter very seriously. After completing the questioning, they will determine whether a lawsuit against the individuals responsible will be filed.
Tourism representatives from Ísafjörður had happened upon the men in Hornvík and discovered the devastation they had caused. The men had not reported that they were traveling to Hornstrandir, as they should have according to the nature reserve’s regulations.
