The United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane which made an emergency landing on Sólheimasandur, a black sand beach in South of Iceland, in 1973 has become famous after being featured in music videos and films.

A tourist who wanted to view the plane wreck was charged EUR 800 (ISK 100,000) by landowners. He has filed a complaint to the South Iceland police, ruv.is reports.

Landowners decided earlier this year to fence the plane wreck off and charge ISK 100,000 for admission. The tourist drove his rental car through the gate without permission. Landowners therefore locked the gate and refused to let him out before he had paid.

One of the landowners, Benedikt Bragason, farmer at Ytri-Sólheimar I, reasoned that the 11 landowners had agreed on the admission fee and that it had been natural to demand that the tourist pay the amount.

Benedikt added that landowners are tired of traffic to the plane wreck. “This is not what we wanted to do, to bar people from driving to the plane. Unfortunately, professionals from the tourism industry were the worst.”

The environment around the plane wreck is under considerable strain.
