A man was arrested and questioned Saturday morning in Vestmannaeyjar islands, suspected of sexually attacking a woman on Saturday morning, RÚV reports. The woman, who is in her forties, was discovered in the yard of a house in the early hours of Saturday morning. She was nearly unconscious, and, according to Stundin, had suffered injuries, among them head injuries.

Stundin reports that talking to DV, Vestmannaeyjar Police Chief Páley Borgþórsdóttir stated the suspect was arrested in his home. She added that the investigation is at a sensitive stage, and that police have not yet been able to complete taking a statement from the victim.

The Vestmannaeyjar Police requested permission to take the suspect into custody, but the South Iceland District Court denied the request. The police referred the case to the Supreme Court, which is considering the request.

The victim was transported by air to Landspítali National University Hospital, from where she was discharged yesterday. She has not pressed charges in the case, but police do have the right to continue investigating without charges being filed.

UPDATE: The Icelandic Supreme Court has approved the request of the Vestmannaeyjar Police to place the suspect in custody until September 24, RÚV reports.
