The search for Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20-year-old Icelandic woman who disappeared early Saturday morning, continues on Reykjanes peninsula today. The area is covered with snow, making search efforts difficult. Car lights were seen in the area Saturday morning, giving police reason to have it thoroughly searched, according to Vísir.

Chief Superintendent Ásgeir Þór Ásgeirsson told RÚV that the next few days will involve searching a large area, extending from Hafnarfjörður to Reykjanes peninsula, in addition to Heiðmörk. If today’s search is not successful, he stated that a major search would be conducted this weekend.

On behalf of the police force, Ásgeir expressed his gratitude to the employers of rescue workers, who have shown the search a great understanding.

He noted that divers, who have searched Hafnarfjörður harbor in recent days, will be given time off to rest today, although they will be on stand-by if something new comes up.

Ásgeir stated that although the search area is large, “no one is about to give up.” He asked people to watch their words and be careful about their comments on social media.
