Icelandic footballer Gylfi Sigurðsson is expected to recover from his knee injury in time for Iceland’s first FIFA World Cup. RÚV reported first.

The midfielder sustained a knee injury last Saturday playing for Premier League club Everton. An announcement on the club’s website says the injury will keep Gylfi on the sidelines for the next six to eight weeks. “We’ll continue to assess Gylfi’s progress on a week-to-week basis and the medical team will work very closely with him, as they would with any injured player, to get him back playing as quickly as possible,” stated Everton manager Sam Allardyce.

Iceland became the smallest ever country to qualify for the FIFA World Cup when they beat Kosovo 2-0 last October, beating previous record-holder Trinidad and Tobago as the smallest nation to have ever done so. Gylfi played for Iceland at the team’s first major tournament, EUFA Euro 2016, where the country reached the quarter finals.
