Khaled Cairo was sentenced to 16 years in prison in the Reykjavík district court today for the murder of Sanita Braune last September, RÚV reports. He was also sentenced to pay each of Braune’s parents ISK 600,000 (USD 6,000/EUR 5,000) and each of her three children ISK 3 million (USD 30,000/EUR 24,000) in compensation. Cairo was present at the sentencing.

Cairo, who is an asylum seeker from Yemen, was convicted of murdering Sanita in her home in west Reykjavík. Khaled stated in court he had been filled with rage when he found out Sanita had been seeing another man. He claimed he did not remember much of what occurred that evening, but remembers striking Sanita with a glass bottle and sitting on top of her with a fire extinguisher and moving it up and down. He denied, however, having killed the victim. Sanita was pronounced dead upon arrival to the emergency room.
