Churches around Iceland have seen many weddings cancelled this coming Saturday, RÚV reports. The reason? Iceland will face off against Argentina in their first ever World Cup match that afternoon. One couple is not fazed by the World Cup hype and will be walking down the aisle as scheduled this weekend, during the second half of the match.
Bride-to-be Edda Ósk Smáradóttir told RÚV she had organised her wedding long before Iceland qualified for the World Cup. When the nation made it into the tournament, breaking the world record for smallest nation to ever do so, the couple realised the possibility that an important match could fall on their special day. When they learned Iceland would face Argentina as they exchanged rings, they considered changing the time of the ceremony. “We thought about it and considered it but the church was booked later in the afternoon, so we couldn’t have been in the same church and we would have also lost the music in the church,” Edda stated.
The couple have not received many cancellations from their guests, and Edda says she will understands if guests watch the ceremony with ear buds to follow along with the game. She herself will get to watch most of it: “I have to show up last.”
