Icelandic Minister of Education Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir is putting forth an action plan to increase the number of teachers around the country, RÚV reports. Elementary schools around the country have been having trouble recruiting teachers in recent years. The plan proposes, among other suggestions, turning the fifth year of teacher training into a paid working year for students.
The task force who worked on the proposal also suggested the Icelandic Student Load Fund provide specific grants for students completing teacher training. The proposal is expected to be put forth in the fall.
