A proposal to reduce the speed limit on several streets in downtown Reykjavík has been submitted to the Department of Environment and Planning, mbl.is reports.

Under the terms of the proposition, the speed limit on Kalkofnsvegur, Geirsgata, Hverfisgata and Lækjargata would be reduced from 50 km/hr [31 mph] to 30 km/hr [approx. 18 mph]. The proposal has been provisionally approved, provided that it receives the approval of the Reykjavík police commissioner.

There is not yet any word as to when the change of speed limit would be enacted.
