The Icelandic national team in women’s handball lost against Romania by three goals, 22-19, in their second match a qualifying group D at the European Championship in Serbia on Wednesday.
The game was more even than Iceland’s first game against Montenegro with Iceland leading 8-5 in the middle of the first half. However, Romania later evened the score and led 15-13 at half time, ruv.is reports.
Romania maintained their lead throughout most of the second half and ended up winning the game. Iceland’s top scorers were Rut Jónsdóttir with five goals and Hrafnhildur Skúladóttir with four. Goalkeeper Guðný Jenný Ásmundsdóttir deflected ten shots.
In qualifying group D, Montenegro is at the top, followed by Romania and Russia and Iceland bottoms out without any points. Iceland plays Russia tonight and the game will decide which team moves on to the intermediary heat with Montenegro and Romania.
