Surtsey Island in 3D
The extensive collection of digital images made available to the public by the National Land Survey of Iceland this week could be used to create more detailed maps, as well as 3D maps of the country, mbl.is reports.

Google Earth and Google Maps have created maps for the country but the information on which the maps are built is free and the Iceland maps are not very accurate.

The company Designing Reality has already produced a 3D map of Surtsey, the southernmost island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago, which was formed during a 1963-1967 underwater eruption, with the images made available yesterday.

According to the company, it is possible to make detailed 3D maps of the entire country, which can be used for surveying, scientific and tourism purposes.

As reported yesterday, the National Land Survey of Iceland (Landmælingar Íslands) recently opened an online collection of 555 pictures taken by Danish surveyors in Iceland between 1900 and 1910.
