Environment Agency to Probe Drinking Water Incident

The Environment Agency intends to investigate whether the Heath Protection Authority handled the situation in Eskifjördur, east Iceland, in the correct manner when contaminated water from a trawler was carried into the town’s drinking water system.

The incident occurred earlier this month. Fish blood from the trawler was accidentally mixed in with the drinking water when fish was unloaded at the local fish factory.

Townspeople weren’t informed of the accident until a week later and, according to Fréttabladid, there has been misleading news of the consequences.

Former member of the Fjardarbyggd municipal council, Andrés Elíasson, has issued harsh criticism of the Health Protection Authority, claiming in a news story that due to their lack of action, hundreds of people suffered from diarrhea.

An earlier news story said that “no cases of people falling ill from drinking polluted water” had been reported.
