February 01 | Roe and Liver Season
Click on the picture to observe how to prepare a traditional Icelandic meal of roe and liver (hrogn og lifur). At this time of year, egg pouches are harvested from female fish, mainly cod and haddock, and sold in fish stores around the country along with the liver. The egg pouches may not look appetizing; just remember that caviar is fish eggs too.  more

Icelandic Touring Association to Guide Free Walks

From the beginning of December onwards the Icelandic Touring Association (FÍ) will offer free guided walks on weekdays in the vicinity of Reykjavík. The idea is to give those who are unemployed an opportunity to exercise and socialize.

“By walking outside new ideas are born and one starts executing things that have been postponed for a long time. It has very good physical and mental influence on everyone, regardless of whether they are unemployed or not,” managing director of FÍ Páll Gudmundsson told Morgunbladid.

People don’t have to be unemployed to participate in FÍ’s walks. Everyone who is interested in light exercise and being outside in good company is welcome. “It is within reach and suitable for all. Each walk takes one to two hours and we provide a guide, light warming up exercises and information,” Gudmundsson said.

The popularity of outdoor activities has increased in the past years and Gudmundsson said these everyday walks are a response to this increased interest. “Somehow everyone becomes equal outside in nature, people from different generations come together and all titles are forgotten.”

The walks begin at 12 noon on Tuesdays and 2 pm on Thursdays and will take place in the vicinity of Reykjavík, for example in the forested area of Heidmörk and Grótta in Seltjarnarnes. The odd hike is also included, to the summit of Mt. Esja, for example.

For further information, contact FÍ. The touring association Útivist is also offering similar walks.

When I first heard of the photographic book Legend by Fiann Paul, portraying people dressed in Viking-style in Icelandic landscapes, I imagined it would depict scenes from Norse mythology. However, the idea with the book is to tell a story of how “The Seeker” finds “The Legend” and it feels like a wishy-washy self-help book.  more
