The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) will put road construction in the Gálgahraun lava field on hold for the next seven to ten days while a committee seeks a resolution in its dispute with environmentalists.
This was the conclusion of a meeting between the Minister of the Interior, IRCA, representatives of the municipality of Garðabær and environmentalists, which took place yesterday.
The committee has yet to be appointed.
“We attended the meeting in the hope of reaching an agreement and this is definitely a step in the right direction,” Gunnsteinn Ólafsson, musician and member of the Hraunavinir board, told vísir.is.
The dispute revolves around the construction of a road to the municipality of Álftanes, leading through Gálgahraun lava field.
