Due to very bad weather and heavy snowstorms over the past days, there is no electricity or hot water to heat up the houses in Ísafjörður, the largest town in the West Fjords.
In Árneshreppur, the most remote populated area in Iceland (population 49), 100 km (60 miles) north of Hólmavík, the electricity went out at 6:00 this morning. It may take up to three days to get the electricity running again, meaning no electricity for the rest of the year.
In Ísafjörður, the power company hopes to fix the problem later today, Saturday. However, the problem is even harder to solve in Súðavík, a town of about 200 people, because roads are closed due to heavy snowfall and risk of avalanches.
