Diver Finds Wreck of Danish Ship in North Iceland

Professional diver Erlendur Guðmundsson found the wreck of the great Danish battleship Tordenskjold on the floor of Siglufjörður in northeast Iceland on Saturday, where it has been for almost 90 years.

Erlendur and the local Herring Era Museum have cooperated on locating the frigate for some time, as stated on the museum’s website.

After serving its purpose as battleship, Tordenskjold ended its days as storage for herring in the famous Siglufjörður herring harbor.

Built in 1854, the ship was 50.4 meters long and 12.4 meters wide, weighing 1,453 tons and originally carrying 44 cannons. These details fit Erlendur’s description of the wreck.

The Herring Era Museum will now request that divers from the Archaeological Heritage Agency of Iceland examine the frigate’s remains.
