“When it comes to safety at sea, and on land, everyone has to be sober,” Sigurgeir Brynjar Kristgeirsson, director of the fishing company Vinnslustöðvar in Vestmannaeyjar, told Fréttablaðið.
According to Sigurgeir, the company’s employees were informed of the company’s policy of zero tolerance to dope and of carrying out narcotics tests last summer.
The tests, carried out on five of the company’s seven trawlers, were conducted by the University of Iceland and have a 99.9% confidence interval.
Eleven employees on three of the trawlers tested positive. All employees yet to take a test will be ordered to do so in the near future.
Every employee at the company signs a contract when hired agreeing to the company carrying out the tests.

The Identification Committee of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police is working on the identification of a body swept up on the beach at Kaldbaksvík in Strandir, the eastern West Fjords, on Saturday. The body was found by travelers in the area.

Trips to the top of Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur (aka Hvannadalshnúkur), have proven popular this year, according to Icelandic Mountain Guides. Hvannadalshnjúkur is a peak on Öræfajökull in South Iceland measuring 2,109 meters in height.
