The town council of Garðabær rejected at its meeting yesterday morning the request from protest group Hraunavinir (‘Lava Friends’) and other environmentalists that the Icelandic Road Administration postpone the construction of a controversial road through the lava field Gálgahraun, connecting Garðabær with Álftanes.
The demonstrators are awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court of Iceland as to whether an injunction will be placed on the project, ruv.is reports.
The town council reasoned that the project is in line with Garðabær’s general land-use plan and that it’s not for the court to decide where the road will be placed.
However, a meeting with Hraunavinir is scheduled to discuss further plans for the area.
At Garðabær town council’s meeting yesterday, a letter by Ragnhildur Jónsdóttir, who calls herself a seer, was also submitted. Ragnhildur is requesting on behalf of elves and other hidden beings in Gálgahraun that their habitat and church be left untouched.
