German television station ZDF is said to be producing a program about the Icelandic passenger ship Goðafoss, which was sunk by a German submarine during World War II. The ship went down a short distance from Reykjavík harbor in November 1944, leading to the deaths of 24 people.
A team of six divers will search for the wreck of Goðafoss, the exact location of which remains unknown. The expedition will be lead by Andreas Peters, who has extensive experience in searching and diving for ship wrecks, Morgunblaðið reports.
Peters became interested in Goðafoss after reading Óttar Sveinsson’s book Útkall – árás á Goðafoss which was released in Germany in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2011.
Peters got in contact with Óttar and started preparations for the trip with Óttar meeting Peters and his crew in Hamburg on the weekend.
The documentary, which will reportedly be 50 minutes in length, will not be the first to be made about the events. The Lost Ship (Árásin á Godafoss), directed by Björn Brynjúlfur Björnsson, premiered on Icelandic TV in 2009.
