Iceland tops the list “Best in Europe 2012 – Emerging Hot Spots”, according to the travel website fodors.com. The country’s “Don’t Miss” destinations include the Blue Lagoon, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and Laugardalur, an outdoor recreation area in Reykjavík.

The list is the result of a survey made among a specific group of people traveling the continent in the past two years, Morgunblaðið reports.
Among other reasons for Iceland’s popularity are the northern lights, the website mentioning that this year the conditions to spot the phenomenon are the best in 50 years.
In the survey, Iceland topped destinations such as Dublin, Crete and Provence. The country has also ranked high on the website’s list of destinations for families, outdoor activities and hiking.
Meanwhile, Icelandair reported a 23 percent increase in passengers in March compared to March 2011, mostly on Iceland-bound flights. The airline brought approximately 54,000 foreign visitors to the country last month; a 31 percent year-over-year increase.
