The Icelandic national team in men’s ice hockey ended up in fourth place in Group A in the Ice Hockey World Championship – Division II, which ended in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, on Wednesday. This is the team’s best achievement so far.
Iceland lost its fifth and last game against Croatia 1-5. Croatia was considered the strongest team before the games but had to make do with the bronze, while with the gold Estonia earned a seat in the top division from where it was relegated last year, Morgunblaðið reports. Spain earned the silver.
Iceland has never competed in such a strong group before and is considered to have improved considerably. The team has, for example, never beat Serbia before and Iceland’s victory over New Zealand knocked the latter team down to Group B.
Ice hockey is a young sport in Iceland; the national team first competed in the World Championship in 1999 and now places 32nd in the world ranking. Further improvements are expected as most of the team’s players are in their early twenties or younger.

An international group of divers recently traveled to Þingvellir National Park in Southwest Iceland to explore this unique diving destination. A Polish guide, Michail Zinieuricz, who works for the DIVE.is, led the team of North Americans and a French couple.

The road to Höfn, a 1,690-person harbor town by the fjord Hornafjörður, is lined with reindeer. Whole herds of the wild horned animals rest peacefully on withered pastures, grace next to sheep and horses and bounce along the road. Soon, Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the region’s biggest attraction, comes into view. Looming over Höfn, its outlet glaciers flow down from the mountains on which the bright white icecap rests.

Sin Fang will celebrate the release of his third album with a release concert in Iðnó on June 12. Flowers was released in February by Morr Music and has been well received by music enthusiasts and critics alike. The concert will be supported by Vök, this year’s winners of the Icelandic Music Experiments.
