The junior women’s team won with a score of 54.899. Denmark and Sweden took home the silver and bronze, respectively. In the senior women team category, Iceland defended its European title with a score of 59.116, clinching the gold from Sweden, in second place, and Finland in third, ueg.org reports.

The excitement among the team was palpable. “No, I have not come back down to earth. I am in seventh heaven and if there was an eighth, I’d be there,” team member Íris Mist Magnúsdóttir told Morgunblaðið.

Head coach Björn Björnsson said the team had decided to play it safe on the day and not perform some of the more difficult exercises they had been practicing. “In the end we did not use the toughest exercises. After the preliminary on Friday we sat down and calculated what we needed to do to get enough good scores to win,” he said.

Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was among those to congratulate the gymnasts.
