The Algarve Cup is an invitational women’s soccer tournament and is held for the 19th time in 2012. Twelve teams competed in this year’s tournament, according to mb.is.
Both Iceland and Denmark came in third place in groups A and B and competed for fifth place in a pleasant 15°C (°F) as it continued to snow in Reykjavík.
Iceland played without some of its key players for a number of reason, leaving out Margrét Lára Viðardsóttir, Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, Rakel Hönnudóttir, Katrín Ómarsdóttir and Helga Jónsdóttir.
Margrét Lára was unable to play today and Sara Björk was required to rest. Rakel, Katrín and Helga are injured.
Playing on behalf of Iceland were Þóra B. Helgadóttir, Guðný Björk Óðinsdóttir, Elísa Viðarsdóttir, Katrín Jónsdóttir, Hallbera Guðný Gísladóttir, Dóra María Lárusdóttir, Harpa Þorsteinsdóttir, Gunnhildur Yrsa Jónsdóttir, Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir, Fanndís Friðriksdóttir and Greta Mjöll Samúelsdóttir.
The final score was 3:1 for Denmark. Iceland has only once beaten Demark on the tournament.
Last year the Icelandic team won a match against the team for the first time with a 1:0 victory courtesy of a goal scored by player Dóra María Lárusdóttir, mbl.is reported earlier today.
The USA played against Sweden for the bronze medal and beat the team 4:0; Norway won the match against Wales for the seventh place, China beat Portugal 1:0 for the ninth place and Ireland beat Hungary 2:1 for the eleventh place.
The final match of the tournament will be played tomorrow at 13:10 local time in Portugal. Germany and Japan will compete for the gold.

On the way back to Reykjavík following this morning's news conference, at which the new government agreement was formally presented, the next Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, and his assistant, Jóhannes Þór Skúlason, who was driving, were stopped for speeding.
