According to a new report from the U.K.’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the average  family of five throws out food worth around ISK 500,000 per year.

The report found that between 30 and 50 percent of all food ends up in the trash. The report states that those in the wealthiest countries throw out the most food.

According to Statistics Iceland, the average monthly expenditure on food for a family of six is ISK 160,000, around ISK 50,000 of which is thrown out.

Journalist and mother of five Lára Ómarsdóttir told Fréttatíminn that her family manages to keep costs to around ISK 100,000 per month through meal planning and not throwing out any food, thus saving around ISK 60,000 per month (USD 465, EUR 350).
