The organizers of the 2012 Olympics in London have turned down an artwork by Icelandic-Danish artist Ólafur Elíasson, who designed the concert and conference center Harpa in Reykjavík. The artwork was supposed to be one of the main art pieces at the games.
Harpa. Photo by Geir Ólafsson.
His concept involved people breathing in and out on behalf of an individual, movement or cause and then describe their breath on a website, visir.is reports.
The artwork was supposed to cost GBP 1 million (ISK 203 million, USD 1.6 million, EUR 1.2 million) and it had already been approved.
The board responsible for the decision explained that the reason for Ólafur’s work being declined is that the concept had changed considerably since it was first presented, as reported in the Daily Mail.
