In recent years, the Icelandic women’s national team in soccer has raised the performance bar for Icelandic soccer culture, and two team members recently showcased their skills in a match they played for their team Malmo in Sweden.

Although the media coverage of female player’s individual successes are seldom reported as much as those of their male counterparts, the women who play for Iceland play a phenomenal game with their individual teams.
Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir scored the winning goal in the 25th minute for her Malmo team in a match against Frankfurt in the Women’s Champions League. The team won a 1:0 victory in the first match of two in the semi-finals. The goal is Sara’s fifth goal for the team in the leagu e this year.
The other hero in the game was goal keeper Þóra B. Helgadóttir, who like Sara played the full 90 minutes. She fiercely defended several attempts by her opponents to score in the match played in Sweden last Thursday.
The teams will meet again next Wednesday in Frankfurt. Frankfurt was thought to be the stronger team with a strong group of players, many playing at a national level for Germany and Sweden.
The Icelandic national team was ranked 15th among national teams by FIFA in September 2011
whereas the Icelandic Men’s team is ranked 106th in the world.
