The winner, Fabiano Caruna, scored a victory of 7.5 in 9 matches after a draw against Hou Yifan in the final round. Hou Yifan is the Women’s World Champion. Hou Yifan fought a valiant game and for a while victory could have gone either way.

Hou Yifan took second place while third place went to Henrik Danielsen, the top Icelandic chess player. Fourth place went to Bosnian Ivan Sokolov who has been one of the top players in the last two years, and fifth place to David Navara from the Czech Republic.

Sixth and seventh place went to Gawain Jones from England, and Sebastian Maze from France. Eighth place went to Boris Avrukh from Israel.

An Icelandic chess player, Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson, who has more often than not won the Reykjavík Open, scored 6.5, mbl.is reports.

Nineteen-year old Fabiano Caruna became a grand champion at the age of 14 and is the youngest man in the history of chess in Italy to win the title. Despite his Italian heritage, he has U.S. citizenship and is therefore also the youngest American to become a grand champion.
