In other sports news, Icelandic handball player Alexander Petersson says he hopes to be able to play with the national team when they come up against Slovenia in the preliminary round of the European Championship in men’s handball in April after injuring his ankle last year causing him to miss the World Championship in Spain.
“I still have substantial pain in my ankle but will hopefully recover soon. It was of course immensely frustrating to not be on the team in Spain but I hope that I will be able to play against Slovenia. It’s going to be a difficult game. As we saw in the World Championship, Slovenia is a really strong team,” Alexander told Morgunblaðið.
Alexander, who is considered one of Iceland’s star players, also plays for the German team Rhein-Neckar Löwen, which is coached by former Iceland coach Guðmundur Guðmundsson.
Alexander played in the team’s European Handball Federation Champions League game against the Ukrainian team Zaporozhye on Saturday night, scoring four goals.
Alexander was voted the Sports Person of the Year 2010 by the Icelandic Sport Press Association.
