The West Fjords police have filed charges for violations of animal protection laws against a 27-year-old man who has admitted to having drowned a Labrador in Þingeyri in December 2011.

According to the charge, the man tied the front and hind legs of the dog, Kolur (formerly known as Diesel), fastened car tires with aluminum rims to the dog and threw it into the ocean by the edge of a road in the innermost part of Dýrafjörður, Fréttablaðið reports.
The man confessed to drowning the dog at the filing of his case before court yesterday. It is demanded that he will be made to serve the appropriate punishment and that the authority to have animals in his care be taken from him.

The government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir will formally step down after a state council meeting with President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson at his residence Bessastaðir at 11 am today. At 3 pm, the new government of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson will attend a state council meeting and afterwards formally take power.
