Search and rescue squads in West Iceland were called out yesterday to assist a man who had fallen five to six meters into a fissure in the summer house region Fjárhústunga near the waterfall Barnafoss in Borgarfjörður.
The man was by himself when the accident occurred and had probably been lying in the fissure for two hours when a group of walkers happened upon him. The man was conscious but unable to move due to back pain, as explained in an ICE-SAR press release.
Emergency services were notified at 5:10 pm and the first squad arrived approximately 30 minutes later. Specialized mountain rescue workers and paramedics were called to the scene. By 6 pm the man was on his way to Reykjavík by ambulance.
