A new Icelandic banknote worth ISK 10,000 (USD 78, EUR 58) is set to be published this year. Central Bank of Iceland governor Már Guðmundsson stated that the first copies will arrive in the spring, at the same time as the golden plover.
The golden plover, which arrival is considered a sign of spring in Iceland, is depicted on the banknote. It will be dedicated to national poet and natural scientist Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807-1845), whose poetry was inspired by the golden plover.
The bill was designed by visual artist and graphic designer Kristín Þorkelsdóttir, who has designed all Icelandic banknotes since the currency change in 1981.
Kristín told ruv.is that the design has now been sent to a printery in England.
After the printing is finished, it must be used to adjust various bill counting machines in Iceland and it is expected to go into use in the late spring or summer.
Until now, the ISK 5,000 bill has had the highest value in Iceland. However, a fake ISK 10,000 banknote depicting former Prime Minister Davíð Oddsson was made as part of an art project in 2008 and, without the artist’s knowledge, put into use.
