A new political party, Lýðræðisvaktin (‘Democracy Watch’), was founded last weekend and elected its board yesterday. It will be chaired by economics professor Þorvaldur Gylfason, who was on the Constitutional Council.
In a statement the party declares its goals to be to “lift the country out of the current economic troubles, free it from the weight of private interests and guarantee that Alþingi [the Icelandic parliament] approve the new constitution in line with the results of the national referendum last autumn.”
Þorvaldur’s position is not formaður or ‘chairman,’ as is usually the case with political parties, but vaktstjóri (‘watch supervisor’). The vice-chair or bakvakatstjóri (‘on call supervisor’) is biochemist Sigríður Ólafsdóttir, ruv.is reports.
The party’s secretary is economist Þórdís Björk Sigurþórsdóttir and laborer Rannveig Höskuldsdóttir, theology professor Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir, lawyer Árni Stefán Árnason and physician Lýður Árnason serve as board members.
Lýðræðisvaktin intends to run in all constituencies for the parliamentary election in April. Its manifesto and candidates will be presented shortly.

The Identification Committee of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police is working on the identification of a body swept up on the beach at Kaldbaksvík in Strandir, the eastern West Fjords, on Saturday. The body was found by travelers in the area.

Trips to the top of Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur (aka Hvannadalshnúkur), have proven popular this year, according to Icelandic Mountain Guides. Hvannadalshnjúkur is a peak on Öræfajökull in South Iceland measuring 2,109 meters in height.
