At the end of last year, a total of 1,655 fishing ships were registered at the Icelandic Maritime Administration. That was an increase of thirty ships from the previous year, according to the Bureau of Statistics and reported by vísir.is today.

Mechanical ships numbered 764, an increase of three ships between years.
Trawlers totaled 58 up from 57 the year prior.
Open fishing boats numbered 833, an increase of 26 from the previous year.
Most of the ships, or 23 percent, were registered with harbors in the West Fjords as their home harbor. This was followed by West Iceland which was home to 19 percent of ships and South Iceland withfive percent of the total fleet.
At the end of 2011, the average age of the Icelandic fishing capital was just under 24 years. The average age of mechanical ships was 22 years, the trawler fleet 27 years and open fishing boats 23 years.

One of the last tasks of Steingrímur J. Sigfússon while in office as minister of industries and innovation was to issue a regulation on Monday extending the reserve for whales in Faxaflói bay, off Reykjavík in Southwest Iceland. The regulation took affect at midnight.

The government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir will formally step down after a state council meeting with President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson at his residence Bessastaðir at 11 am today. At 3 pm, the new government of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson will attend a state council meeting and afterwards formally take power.

Air traffic was grounded at Keflavík International Airport for up to two hours this morning due to a failure in the flight data system. Due to the delay, many passengers missed their connecting flights.
