Amendments to the VAT rate and tariffs on condoms and reusable diapers were adopted in parliament before Christmas. The amendments were brought by Lilja Mósesdóttir and Eygló Harðardóttirr, ruv.is reports.

In 2008, it was reported that the sale of Durex condoms had dropped by 25 percent following the collapse of the Icelandic banking system. The development is not consistent with sales in other countries, where sales have increased following the economic crisis.

According to Ásgeir Sveinsson, divisional manager at Halldór Jónsson ehf., which imports Durex condoms, the reason for the drop in sales was partly because the price of condoms has risen.
