More than quarter of a century after Icelandic private television channel Stöð 2 started broadcasting, the community in the northern part of Dýrafjörður in the West Fjords has finally been connected with a new transmitter erected on the top of the mountain Sandfell, above the town of Þingeyri.

Until recently, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, was the only channel available in the area. The transmitter also enables the community to access private television channel Skjár 1.

Guðmundur Ásvaldsson from Núpur in Dýrafjörður, where a popular summer hotel is located, told Ísafjörður-based news site Bæjarins Besta that the community is happy about the new transmitter.

“We have been waiting for this for 10 to 15 years,” he said.

Now people in the northern part of Dýrafjörður can watch the World Championship in Handball, which starts in Spain today. All 60 games will be broadcast live on one of Stöð 2’s sports channels.
