A new survey aiming to determine the most beautiful word in the Icelandic language received a total of 8,288 suggestions. Some words came up more than once, resulting in approximately individual 2,600 words. Now, a special committee will choose 30 words, taking into consideration both the word itself and the reason for the suggestion.
Guðmundur H. Guðmundsson, publicist of the University of Iceland’s School of Humanities, told ruv.is that many participants expressed interesting reasons for their choice.
The 30 runner-up words will be divided into three age categories.
Guðmundur could not say which word had been mentioned the most often. “That will not be divulged so as not to influence people when they choose between the suggestions in the week of November 5-11,” he explained.
The most beautiful word will be announced November 15.
