Twenty-six Icelanders are currently locked up in prisons in eight different countries on four continents.
Twenty-three of the 26 individuals are in jail for narcotics smuggling and three for violence. Two out of three, or sixteen Icelanders, are locked up in prisons in Denmark, mbl.is reports. All prisoners are male with the exception of two women incarcerated in the Czech Republic.

The latest Icelander to be placed into custody abroad is a 21-year-old man who was arrested at Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport last week, attempting to leave with four and a half kilograms of cocaine.
