The women’s national ice hockey team competed in DIV II Group B of the World Cup which was held in South-Korea last week. Regular news of the team’s results was reported by Ice Hockey Iceland’s website, ihi.is.

The team overcame jet lag from a long trip and won its first game, which was against Belgium, 2:1. Birna Baldursdóttir scored both goals for Iceland. Their next game was an exciting match. By the end of regular game time, the score was 1:1 against South-Korea. No goal was scored in extended time and therefore the game was decided by penalty shots. Iceland lost 2:1, the only Icelandic goal scored by Anna Sonja Ágústsdóttir. Iceland then lost 2:7 against Poland, which came in first place in the tournament. Both goals were scored by Sara Smiley, who was also elected the best player of the game. In an important game, the girls won against South-Africa 2:6. In their final game, the Icelandic players had to accept a 0:3 defeat against the Spanish team, which took second place in the competition. In the end, the Icelandic team had to accept fourth place, after coming very close to a third place medal.

Despite coming in fourth, the best defensive player of the entire tournament belonged to the Icelandic team; Anna Sonja Ágústdóttir. The best player of the Icelandic team, chosen by the Icelandic coaches Eiríkur Tahtinen and Johan Björnfot, was Karitas Halldórsdóttir, mbl.is reports.
