A questionnaire in relation to Iceland’s membership application to the European Union, presented to Prime Minister of Iceland Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir by European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn on Tuesday, has now been made public.

The questionnaire will assess whether Iceland fulfills the EU’s membership obligations. The responses provided by the Icelandic authorities will serve as a basis for the Commission to prepare an opinion on Iceland's membership application, which will then be submitted to the European Council, as stated on the website of the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
During his visit to Iceland, Commissioner Rehn also met with Foreign Minister Össur Skarphédinsson, Finance Minister Steingrímur J. Sigfússon and the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Icelandic parliament, Althingi.
Yesterday, Rehn addressed the attendees of an open meeting at the University of Iceland, speaking on the topic of the European perspective of Iceland.

Dadi Gudbjörnsson's art with its smiley faces, Aladdin's lamps, gleaming hearts, blue mountains and psychedelic flora of unearthly origin reminds me of the cheesy R.E.M. song “Shiny Happy People”. The sugar-sweet naivety fails to amuse me but I must admit it infects my mood with delirious joy.

Former President of Iceland Vigdís Finnbogadóttir turned 80 on 15 April this year and Mayor Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir—in making her an Honorary Citizen of Reykjavík to mark the occasion—observed that Finnbogadóttir’s life was interwoven with that of Reykjavík. In June 1980 Finnbogadóttir made history when she became the world’s first democratically elected female head of state.
