Increase in Convictions for Pornography in Iceland

The number of convictions for the possession of pornography in Iceland has increased considerably in the past decade. All forms of pornography are illegal in Iceland but such convictions mostly concern those who are in possession of child pornography.

In 2007, 10 people were convicted for possession of pornographic material and 13 in 2006. That is a vast increase considering that no one was convicted for possession of pornography in 1993, Morgunbladid reports.

According to criminologist Helgi Gunnlaugsson, easier access to pornography may explain this increase. Nowadays almost anyone can find pornographic material on the internet and so convictions for possession of such material have increased.

Gunnlaugsson said he believes so-called internet filters, which block access to websites containing material involving violence against children, only provide a false sense of security. “People will always find a way around them.”
