All Newborn Babies Get Handknitted Caps

The Icelandic Women’s Association will donate a handknitted cap to every newborn baby in the year 2010. The Women’s Association decided to undertake this project on its 80 year anniversary. The first handknitted caps were given to the Maternity Ward of Landspítali hospital last week.

Over five thousand births are anticipated nationwide in the New Year. There are ten maternity wards in hospitals in the country and midwifes will give the hats to the parents.

With this project the Women’s Association wants to give all newborn citizens a warm welcome whilst attracting attention to the great but quiet work conducted by the Women’s Associations in Iceland.

A greeting card comes with every hat with the name of the woman who knitted it and the name of the Women’s Association she belongs to.

The first baby of the year was a girl who was born at the Maternity Ward at Landspítali hospital, 28 minutes past midnight, January 1. The birth went really well according to the midwife and the girl was 52 centimeters long.
