The women’s gymnastics team of sports club Gerpla and the Icelandic national teenage girls’ team made history at the European Championship in group gymnastics in Malmö, Sweden last weekend: Gerpla claimed the gold and the national team placed third.
Thorgerdur Didriksdóttir, chairwoman of the Gymnastics Association of Iceland, told Fréttabladid that this is an outstanding achievement. “It is unique because we traveled with a large group and everyone reached their goals and more than that.”
Didriksdóttir said the group has been showered with congratulations. Among those congratulating the gymnasts was Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir who wrote in her greeting that they have earned a place for themselves among the best athletes in Iceland’s history.
“It is good to sense that we are being noticed. It was a long and winding road and extensive practice was required—such an achievement cannot be reached in one day. It is extremely difficult to succeed in gymnastics so it is pleasing that we have made it so far,” Didriksdóttir concluded.
