Saw the Eruption Starting

A guide in the Lómagnúpur area Örlygur Sigurjónson told mbl.is that he saw the smoke coming up from the volcano at 7.15 PM Saturday evening.

Sigurjónsson said that it quite clear that the eruption was very powerful. “This is something very grand in the evening sun.” He said that the smoke is growing fast and may be up to three kilometers high already. He was coming down from a climb to the top of Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland’s highest mountain in the south of Vatnajökull, with a ten man group.
