Close Call for Container Ship

Last night, Brúarfoss, a 126 m/415 ft long container ship, lost its engine north of the Reykjanes peninsula and started drifting towards Garðskagi, at the northernmost tip of the peninsula, Vísir.is reports.

To make matters worse, weather conditions were far from ideal with  strong westerly winds and seven meter high waves.

The Coast Guard called nearby trawler Höfrungur for help and the Coast Guard cruiser Ægir, which was located at the other side of Reykjanes peninsula, was put on full steam towards Brúarfoss.

In addition, the Coast Guard helicopter was sent to the nearby town of Sandgerði to be on watch.

Brúarfoss drifted fast but with only one nautical mile to the shore, its crew managed to start the engine again.

Now, Brúarfoss, one of Eimskip’s many container ships, with a crew of eleven is on its way to the Westman Islands, accompanied by Ægir, where the 5,400 kW engine will be repaired.
